Adele, like many, is missing out on this years’ Notting Hill Carnival in London, which has gone virtual for 2020. On Sunday, August 30, the 32-year-old posted an Instagram photo of herself in honor of the annual event.
In the pic, the singer-songwriter donned tie-dye leggings, an itty-bitty multicolored triangle bikini top and a chunky gold necklace.
But the focal point of the snap is the “Rumor Has It” singer’s bantu knots and yellow feather hair accessories. The look is a hot topic of conversation in the comments section, namely because her followers are accusing her of cultural appropriation.
The hitmaker captioned the snap, “Happy what would be Notting Hill Carnival my beloved London .”
The Notting Hill Carnival is a celebration of Caribbean heritage. For the first time, this year’s event is totally virtual, so it’s likely that this is a throwback pic of Adele’s, which she posted since she can’t be there in real life. Nevertheless, the internet is less than thrilled by the photo.
“Giiiiirl you about to cancelled for cultural appropriation,” one of the singer’s 38.6 Instagram followers commented.
Many fans are quite literally begging the star to delete the photograph. One wrote, “ADELE DELETE UR GONNA GET DRAGGEDDD.”
Another person commented, “ADELE THIS IS A NAH. I REPEAT THIS IS A NAH!!! Take it down and go to your room and think about what you did.”
Then there are fans who have noted that while she likely meant the post as a nice gesture, it doesn’t come off that way. “Appreciate the love of Jamaican culture but the Bantu knots kind of don’t sit right,” wrote one social media user.
And finally, there are those who supported Adele’s post. “As a woman of Caribbean descent myself (Trinidad) I think she looks great,” a fan commented. “Too many people in the comments demonstrating that they still can’t differentiate between cultural appreciation and cultural appropriation.”
